January is Radon Awareness Month, a Good Reminder to Test Your Home

January 2, 2026

The Weber-Morgan Health Department is reminding residents of Weber and Morgan counties that radon testing is a simple and important step to protect their family’s health.

Radon is an invisible, odorless, radioactive gas that results from the natural decay of uranium in the rocks and soil. It enters through cracks in the foundation and can accumulate in tightly sealed homes. Short-term radon detectors can quickly indicate whether follow-up testing or mitigation is needed.

What residents can do:

  • Test your home for radon, especially during colder months when homes are closed up.
  • The WMHD has a community digital radon monitor lending program available to residents of Weber or Morgan County.  To check out a digital radon monitor for seven days for free, call or text 801-399-7265.
  • If elevated levels are found, learn about proven mitigation options that can significantly reduce radon indoors.

According to the EPA, exposure to radon levels over a lifetime at 4 picocuries per liter causes lung cancer in 7 out of every 1,000 people.  If you are a former smoker, your risk may be higher.

Short-term tests are also available for purchase at most local hardware stores or online. The Utah DEQ Radon Program has short-term radon kits that can be purchased for $13.95 sent to you by mail to be placed in your home for three days and then you mail the test to a lab to be emailed results.
