Drive-Thru Flu Clinics, School Outreach Clinics Begin
(Ogden, UT) – Weber-Morgan Health Department is reminding residents that the best way to have fewer sick days and missed activities during the school year and upcoming holidays is to get vaccinated.
“We’re just asking people to plan ahead,” says Lekelsi Talbot, director of nursing for the Weber-Morgan Health Department. “Many of us lead busy lives and a getting a severe respiratory illness can really impact your day-to-day activities, especially if you work, are in school or have family members to care for.”
Influenza and COVID vaccines arrived at the health department in September. They’ve been updated to carry the most common circulating strains of each virus. Both vaccines are available to anyone age 6 month and older. The health department will have high-dose influenza vaccine for those with lower immunity and over age 65.
Talbot says one of the most frequently asked questions is if you can get more than one shot at the same time.
“It is safe to get multiple vaccines at the same time. We have many people who are traveling or getting ready for company to visit and want that extra protection and they choose to get them at the same time,” Talbot said. “It takes about two weeks to build up to full immunity or protection and that is one of the reasons why it is a good idea to plan ahead.”
Appointments are available in Ogden and Morgan by calling 801-399-7250. The department is also planning two drive-thru clinics, September 27 and October 11 in the parking lot of the WMHD campus in downtown Ogden 477 23rd Street. Families are also invited to attend one of the school outreach clinics scheduled through the month of October. Please check with your school nurse to find out when they are visiting a school near you.
The department also offers vaccines to protect against whooping cough and pneumonia and encourages people to check to see if they are up-to-date when they come in for their flu shot.
Anyone who wants a vaccine should check with their insurance to see if its covered and bring their card with them if they have one. The health department offers vaccine on an income-based sliding scale for those who are uninsured.
